Want to help with the Bell Tower? - Here's what we do

Editorial Tasks:  Reminders go out to regular contributors of the Bell Tower about 2-3 days before the due date (15th of each month).  These contacts send me their items to put in the Bell Tower; all correspondence is done via email.

From the email, I download the articles and photos or copy and paste them into a Word document. I try to fit the newsletter items into a heading template.  Sometimes I need to resize and reduce photos that are used so they do not make the newsletter too large.  After I place them in the right sections, I go through and check the grammar and spelling.  If sentences sound awkward, I try to rewrite them so they flow smoother.  I try to make all parts of the newsletter look consistent with each other in style and spacing.  For ease of producing and reading the newsletter, the font is kept consistent (text is Arial 10; headings are Arial 12 bold.) Once everything is accumulated and fixed, I send it on to Sara Jens, the pastor, Debbie Mullinax (our office administrator), and the council president.  Sara will begin to fit it into a newsletter form while the others look it over for omissions and mistakes.  If someone hands in something late, I will need to add it to the newsletter and send out a revision to everyone.  I try to send the newsletter to Sara about the 17th of the month.

Ways Members Can Get Involved:

  1. Write up articles that would interest the congregation or that would alert them to things coming up on the calendar, making sure these articles are in to me by the 15th of the month.  Many of them can be the same ones that show up in the weekly bulletin.
  2. If someone would like to be the backup editor in case I can’t do it that month, that would also be helpful.

Average Amount of Time I Spend per Month:

About sixteen hours per month total, but it’s usually 4-5 days with just a little bit each day.

New Member Classes

Welcome!

Twice each year, Bethel holds classes for people wishing to become members of the congregation. For those who have little or no background in the Christian church as well as those transferring from other Lutheran congregations, this series of three classes gives you an opportunity to get to know others who are joining Bethel as well as to ask your questions and learn about the Lutheran Church, our congregation, and what it means to be a member of a church.

Next New Member Classes - October 2nd and 9th:

During the Sunday School hour (9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.), prospective new members and those who are transferring into Bethel will meet for coffee and a “short course” about Bethel, the Lutheran teachings we hold dear, and opportunities to grow in faith and serve in our community.

Please complete the New Member Information Form along with the Transfer Form (or you may find them located in the narthex) and return them to the church office or bring them along to the classes.

Members of ELCA congregations may transfer their memberships at any time, but attending the new member classes will help with connecting with the ministries, people, and practices of Bethel.

A nursery is available for children under 4. Children 4 and older can attend a Sunday School class with other children their age while the new member classes are being held.

Please contact the church office if you have any questions and RSVP by September 25th if you are interested in attending these classes – This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 703-368-3943.

Want to help with the membership classes?

What's Needed: Organization and communication for meals served at the New Member Class.
How Much Time Does it Take?: Depending on the role, a few hours twice each year.

Bulletin Boards

The Bulletin Board Ministry was started in an effort to keep our boards (three committee boards and one small “Office Information” board) current and eye catching.

They’re changed approximately 4 times a year; the background papers and borders that are used are usually seasonal (ex., fall) or in keeping with the church seasons (i.e., Advent).

The boards that are changed every 4-6 weeks usually have decorations based on the Church Season, Holiday, Confirmation, First Communion, Church Events or Bible Verses or Stories.

Sources for the content come from several places.  There are Bulletin Board idea books with patterns that can be used for inspiration.  At times a Bible Verse, other churches’ signs with “thoughts of the day” provide inspiration. Also, the committees are responsible for going through their information to be back on the board. Usually e-mail is sent to committee chairs for a heads up that the boards are going to be changed.

Once the information is gathered and new paper, borders, and other decorations are assembled, these boards usually take 2-3 hours at the most to complete.

The Bulletin Board Kits, paper and borders are located in the second grade Sunday School room.  If specific colors of paper are needed or if there is a kit or border that is not available, they can be purchased by Ruth Gomes with several days’ notice.  There is a small budget for the Bulletin Board Ministry to purchase basic materials.

Bethel groups (committees, choirs, youth groups or Sunday School classes) are welcome to adopt a board for a month.
