Disaster Response Opportunity
Volunteers are needed to work with crews rebuilding homes in Waverly, Iowa, for the next two to three weeks. The Northeastern Iowa Synod notified synod bishops of this activity being coordinated by Nechama (pronounced “na cama”), a Jewish response to disaster. Faith based organizations are working together for disaster recovery in the area following severe flooding, including Lutheran Disaster Response and Wartburg College, whose Center for Community Engagement is working with Nechama. Nechama provides tools, safety equipment and training for volunteers.
To volunteer for this work, contact Sarah Witte at the Wartburg College Center for Community Engagement at 319-352-8701 (office) or 815-871-4413 (cell). Housing for groups providing disaster relief in the Cedar Valley area may be available at the Lutheran Campus Ministry Center of the University of Northern Iowa by contacting the Rev. Scott Duffus at 507-390-4306 or lscunicp@cfu.net. More information about the cooperative disaster response effort is available from the Rev. Mark A. Anderson, assistant to the bishop, Northeastern Iowa Synod, at 319-352-1414 or andersonm@neiasynod.org.
